Owned by Matt and Angie Shockley, Deerfield Restaurant and Pub is a full service restaurant and pub, serving patrons 7 days a week. Located in the center of Canaan Valley in the Deerfield Village Resort, the restaurant is a favorite of both locals and tourists.
The Executive Chef, Matt Shockley opened the restaurant because cooking is one of his passions and he has always wanted to own his own restaurant. Bringing in his family recipes, along with Angie’s baking, the food at the restaurant is appealing to everyone’s palate.
Scott Huffman is the Manager of the restaurant. Scott began working for the previous owners of Deerfield Restaurant as a dishwasher when he was 17 years old. He worked his way up to cook, head cook, manager and general manager. Since that time, he has managed and owned other restaurants. Scott also serves as the Executive Assistant to Angie and lives on property in the Cabin Mountain Living Center complex. He has extensive experience in the therapeutic industry and really enjoys working with young adults and their families.
Clients who are enrolled in the Journey, Applewood, Cabin Mountain or Community Integration are afforded the opportunity to work in a culinary field, should they choose. They receive training on everything from dishwashing to menu creation. Matt and Angie teach each employee the skills needed to execute a successful meal service every night.
Entrusting the clients to operate and run the kitchen of a successful restaurant can seem risky, but it offers great rewards. Clients learn how to function as a member of a team in chaotic and stressful situations. The restaurant, particularly busy during the ski season, fills up quickly with hungry patrons ready for a great meal. With hand tossed pizzas, specialty pastas, bone-in rib eye steaks, grilled vegetables, steak and shrimp kabobs, and specialty salads, the menu is diverse and does require a great deal of skill and practice to execute.
Because it is operated as a family business, everyone pitches in to help, which makes working in the restaurant an enjoyable experience. It is also one that will provide skills for anyone seeking employment in the culinary industry.
